floppyfw

Old news

2006-11-12: Branched out floppyfw-3.0 to it's own subversion tree. The floppyfw tree may be a bit unstable for now since I am implementing buildroot2 (kconfig).

2006-11-05: floppyfw 3.0!. Yup, a release. It's been available for some time already but the plan was to to some more with the web site before announcing but that hasn't happened yet.

2006-08-29: floppyfw 3.0rc2!. Not that many changes so we might be ready.

2006-07-05: The floppyfw Trac is now a lot more sane again. I've hopefully removed all the spam and also hopefully, done that without removing real peoples work.

2006-07-02: Upgraded the floppyfw Trac. You can now register and log in and have to do this for ticket and Wiki reporting and writing. This thanks to trac-spam which I hope will be reduced by this.

2006-06-05: floppyfw 3.0rc1!. Not package compatible with the 2.9 releases, you have to use the 3.0 devkit.

2006-05-24: Blimey. Castle is now a PHP-free zone. This security advisory about newsportal explains why and also why the server and web pages has been down for some time. I am pondering about newsportal replacement and I hope to have a solution within a week. It does not look like anything was compromized, the skriptkid has just uploaded a php zombliescript and started scanning other networks.

2006-04-25: The development kit for the 3.0 series is ready. This is a complete kit for building floppyfw from "make" and for building packages for floppyfw. Is is available as the usual chroot-able tar.bz2, the new VMWare playable image and an ISO image with instructions on how to install the devkit on a hard drive/partition. Again, if you want to follow the development, look at the SVN repository and the Development directory

2006-01-15: Ok, I've made a front page to The floppyfw Trac, so I guess it is time to introduce it. Click in and have a look. Yes, there are no real content in the Wiki part, yet but I'd be happy if people added tickets.

2006-01-08: Happy new year. There has not been much movement on this page but those following the news groups knows better. My wife and I have forked an enchanting little girl but I've also had time to do some floppyfw work. Now you can follow the development in the Subversion tree and I am also working on using Trac for source browsing, documentation and bug handling.

2005-04-16: I am slowing down again with floppyfw-2.99.4 with mainly bug fixes. The Changelog has the details. Go here for download of the many different versions there are now.

2005-03-15: It's always nice to be mentioned, this time on Newsforge.

2005-03-01: I made an irc channel on oftc.net. The name is, of course, #floppyfw.

2005-02-07: floppyfw-2.0.11. Kernel 2.4.29. See Changelog for details and here for download and install.

2005-03-20: I am a liar. I said, while releaseing 2.99.1, that it's a freeze for release. Well, it wasn't. floppyfw-2.99.3 is the version and the Changelog are quite big, with a new (extra) package format and lzma compressed initrd are the biggest changes. Go here for download of the many different versions there are now.

2005-02-28: The first kinda frozen prerelase: floppyfw-2.99.1. Kernel 2.4.29, uClibc 0.9.27 . See Changelog for details and here for download. New devkit aswell.

See Changelog for details and here for download of the many different versions there are now of which the flash is new (and not tested).

2004-05-11: Some status; 2.9 goes along, new (unannounced) devkit is released (If you are curious about the development, check the development download directory from time to time and of course the newsgroups (Which is where I found this little cute GIF.). A 2.0.9 is also long overdue. The reason for me being a bit slow is that all free time is spent finding a new house since we sold the flat.

2004-01-04: floppyfw-2.9.6. See Changelog for details and here for download and install.

2003-12-11: floppyfw-2.0.8. Kernel 2.4.23. See Changelog for details and here for download and install.

2003-05-08: Ok, the news server has been flakey the last few days. I decided to switch from a self compiled INN to the Debian package. It's not perfect yet (the configs I use, not the package).

2003-02-14: floppyfw-2.9.1. This is the road to 3.0 and contains many changes, both small and huge. See Changelog for details and here for download and install.

2003-02-11: I've made a new directory for development stuff. There might be a little, ehh, surprise there now.

2002-08-11: floppyfw-1.9.99. Kernel 2.4.19 and iptables 1.2.7. Hopefully the last one of the 1.9 series. I'm chicken enough not to make this a 2.0.0. See Changelog for details and the download page for other images (1680K and pppoe).

2001-04-07Those reading the news group knows that i am working on 1.0.10 and that we are now into pre5 of this release. It's in the download directory.

2001-03-10 In the category not nessesarily useful, but cool we now have a micro_httpd package. Yup, a webserver. It is not possible to use this for configuration and it won't exactly help security but if you need to server one file from somewhere you do have a quite instant webserver. It was made by Andreas Schweitzer.

2001-03-04: More local sites around, this time it's a Dutch site for users of the Mxstream package used in Holland. This was submitted to me by the author, E.M. Janssen.

2001-02-21Got a tip about these French pages for how to use floppyfw on french ADSL lines. it looks very good and also have it's own image with PPTP as many french ISPs seem to use this instead of PPoE.

2001-01-15: Bad (sector). the latest images was a bit hard to get obviously. I definately need a new hard drive.. they should be downloadable now.

2001-01-14: floppyfw-1.0.9. Now working with the PPPoE packages. Changelog

2001-01-13: floppyfw-1.9.3. Now with kernel 2.4.0 and I'll declare it a beta. See Changelogfor details

2001-01-08: SysAdmin Magazine has made an article about floppyfw available. It's an introduction and a good HOWTO. LinuxToday has a story with discussion about the article.

2000-12-30: floppyfw-1.0.7. Now with kernel 2.2.18 and some other small changes as a better way to add the PPPoE stuff, which also has a new 1.0.7 version. (which seems to be a bit broken, fix coming soon, use 1.0.6 for now)

2000-12-22: Ken Yap has implemented scripts for booting floppyfw over the net in his Etherboot package. The 4.6.12 version is the first one with this. Check out contrib/mkffwnb/ in the tarfile.

2000-11-20: floppyfw-1.9.2 is out. Some of you has been monitoring the news group and the download area and has noticed the 1.9.1 image. This is the 1.9 development series and contains kernel 2.4 and iptables. the rest follows the 1.1 development. See the Changelog for details, as usual.

2000-11-17: New "design" on the web pages. Basically, some experimentation with SSI resulted in a menu on the left side and a shorter main page. I hope this works on most browsers, it needed some changes in the css file.

2000-11-02: Brad Wood has done it again. Now he has made a 1.0.6 version of floppyfw with PPPoE. it can be found in the PPPoE directory in the contrib area.

2000-10-05: the Beta release, floppyfw-1.1.2 is available. I need feedback from you users. see the Changelog for details. Consider this a beta, it might not work. I do need feedback from you users, it's hard to find bugs without.

2000-09-24: floppyfw-1.0.6. Now with kernel 2.2.17 and a security upgrade of glibc, syslogd and klogd (from the debian slink security update.).

2000-08-08: Ups and downs. Castle, the server I run everything on, seems to not want to be stable these days. Now it is one or two of it's hard drives that is trying to gain control over the SCSI bus and hang it. With luck from time to time. I may start on the search for new HW, at least solve the problem somehow.

2000-07-24: Bad luck struck me. The mainboard blew a fuse while I was on vacation and I wasn't able to fix it until today. Only good news I can give is that I've started working on a glibc 2.1 / Linux 2.4 version of floppyfw, which will be 1.9 when it's released as a beta and 2.0 of floppyfw when we're all happy with it. But first, my last week of vacation.

2000-07-14: Brad Wood contributed something again. This time it was all the network modules and a few others, for 2.2.16 and floppyfw 1.0.5. they are in download/contrib/Modules/ together with a simple instruction Readme.

2000-05-14: floppyfw-1.0.4. Now with kernel 2.2.15 and added support for the tulip based cards and intel EEpro series.

2000-05-14: made a contrib directory for contributions. This is for other stuff than the pure .bz2 packages. Right now it's only Brad Wood's PPPoE stuff, which is also new.

2000-05-14: Made ip_masq_icq available. read the Readme for instructions.

April 2000: News server. I made a news group om ny news server instead of maintaining a mailing list. floppyfw.general is the only one I've made so far. the news server is news.zelow.no and it is open but has no external news groups.

April 2000: Anonymous ftp is now possible. www.zelow.no has it.

2000-03-20: Ramon Leon has made this firewall.ini and it's pretty extensive. I haven't tested it but feel free to try it out and comment it to either him or me.

The packages directory now contains a PPP package. not tested but some people have gotten it to work with some tweaking.

A Mirror list is available, hopefully it will grow bigger. If you mirror this site or just the download, please let me know.

Another Japanese floppyfw page at Kochi Linux User Group's web pages. This is a Japanese mirror of this site with the pages in Japanese.

A Japanese FAQ is made, it's a part of the Japanese FAQ/DOC Collection

Beginners instructions. David A. Nelson wrote this quite long and nice description and document.

DHCP-support is now a part of the basic floppy.

Made a VPN package out of VPND, vpnd.bz2
